Looking Back: Karateka

Things have been slow on this blog lately, so probably it's a good time as any to revisit a game that helped to nurture my love for games. I remember being around the age of seven and playing games on my moms 4 color IBM. I don't really remember the model, but it was one heavy piece of machinery. It was during the age where floppies were cool and DOS boot-up discs were a must.

Games these days were of course very archaic. Very linear, lacking in narrative, short and usually increased longevity by being brutally difficult. One game that I have fond memories of was Karateka. You played a young hero who happens to be equipped with the mastery of Karate out to save some chick from an evil dude. Details are a little vague, but you infiltrate his fortress on a mountain (I assume since he climbs up a cliff at the start of the game) and battle his guards which happen to be conveniently scattered so you can defeat them one by one (I guess evil institutions don't really value team players). Occasionally you'll be visited by attacking hawks which thankfully can be punched in the face. It's was an awesome game at its time and probably an inspiration for games like prince of persia. Have a look.

Oh yeah, the games teaches you a valuable life lesson as well. Becareful how you approach a girl, you just might get kicked in the face and die. Running, arms open is the way to go! The one below is a must watch!
